Influential American artist Jasper Johns spent much of his career creating enduring fine art by reworking a familiar inventory of images and symbols. Johns is best known for his paintings of the American flag and other well received works such as his classic "Target 1974", offered here.
Though he is not generally considered a Pop Artist, Johns is often in the discussion. His work has always focused on commonplace objects...and he experimented briefly with screen-printing, much like Pop Art pioneer Andy Warhol. In 2006...the Johns painting "False Start" was purchased by a private collector for $80 million, making it the most expensive painting ever sold by a living artist.
